In 1976, the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies sponsored the production of the original opera "Be glad then, America" to commemorate America's bicentennial. The opera incorporated a chorus of two hundred Penn State choir students, professional opera singers from the Metropolitan Opera, popular folk singer Odetta, and Penn State's ROTC students as soldiers.
